2 teams desperate for a win and a trophy!

This year final sees Liverpool and Spurs go head to head in a bid to see who wins this years trophy.

The final will be contested in Madrid at the home ground for Athletico Madrid in front of a capacity 68000 crowd by two English clubs for the first time since Chelsea played Manchester United in the 2008 final.

This will be spurs fist ever final and for Liverpool will be looking to lift the trophy for the 6th time. A record for an English club.

After promising seasons for both clubs neither have collected any silverware again this season. Both clubs need need this trophy more than anything for their own unique reasons. It has become crucial and vital that they both win. The problem is only one can.

Everyone will be expecting these two teams to serve up a free flowing, all out attacking game of football, when the final kicks off. The kind of football these two teams play week in week out in the  English Premier League.

I for one am not convinced this will be the case. The prize at the end of the game is so great, and with so much riding on it. A tight more pragmatic approach might just take over. Almost a win at all costs, attitude might come into play.

Why Liverpool can’t afford to loose it?

Manager Jurgen Klopp has built and moulded this squad into a highly competitive, high energy, motivated team. Full of passion, flair and a willingness to play exciting attacking football. They have grown into a team that is now challenging and threatening to win the big trophy’s. The problem is they have not got over the final hurdle and actually won anything. They have competed for two major honours over the last two seasons and been runners up in both. Last season it was this very competition. Loosing out to the Spanish giants Real Madrid in the final. The season before, it was the European cup losing out to.. in the final.  This season they have pushed for the Premiership title all season and amassed a huge final points total of 97 but even this wasn’t enough to grab the title with Manchester City beating them to the trophy with 98 points.

The pressure is on for Jurgen Klopp and his squad. One big win, lift that first trophy under his guidance and it will be lift off. The winning mindset could set Liverpool FC into another era of dominance within the game of football.

Why spurs dare not blow It?

Manager Mauricio Pochattinio is regarded as one of the most exciting talented coaches in the World.  He has turned Spurs into a constant top 4 finisher, giving the club regular Champions League football. His starting 11 is considered as good as anything in the world of football, with the ability to beat anyone on their day. The lack of investment in allowing him to buy new players and improve the whole squad, means that this achievement and reaching the final is even greater, almost a miracle.

The problem he has is that he has not won anything yet as a manager. You feel like one win and it will be lift off for him as a manager, with the biggest clubs in the World can then consider him as their next go to manager. Win one of the biggest prizes in World football and Spurs could then start to attract the bigest names in the game to come and play for them. With a brand new stadium, considered to be one of the best in the World, and a chance for top players to live in the famous city of London. Win it and it could be lift off for Tottenham moving themselves into the very elite of World football.

The semi-final miracle comebacks count for nothing!

Both teams showed enormous heart desire and a will to win at all costs, with a never give up attitude to reach the final but that counts for nothing if that trophy does not come back to your clubs trophy cabinet.

Liverpool overturned a  3-0 first leg deficit to win 4-0 at home in the second leg against Barcelona

While Spurs lost their first leg at home 1-0 and found themselves 2-0 down in the second Leg meaning they need 3 goals in the second half to go through and they achieved it with the last kick of that game.

That was the highs of what football can deliver but what happens next?

Time to go head to head!

champions league trophy

It’s a close one to decide who needs it most, both clubs are on the brink of something special. Both managers are proving they can handle the big occasion. At the start of the season you would not have said these two teams would be contesting the Champions League final but that is how it has turned out.

Both managers need the win otherwise the media will be circling around like vulchers looked for away to pile the pressure onto them once again.

Both clubs want the win for the prestige and glory of it.

Both sets of players need it for all their hard work over the season and to start believing that they can actually win trophy’s.

If they both become desperate on the night for the win anything could happen it could turn out to be a classic and one of the best finals ever.

Liverpool will no doubt be made favourites by the bookmakers due to past glories in this competition but that will count for nothing this time around.

Can Spurs hold their nerves for such a massive occasion or will their lack of cup final experience count against them?

Either way a new name will be etched into the trophy this time around after Real Madrid’s three consecutive wins.

Both teams have already proved they will never give up.

It’s now just a qustion of who wants and needs it more.

I would love your thoughts on how you think the final will go and who you think needs it more?

Hey; Football finals is always an exciting time in the game for me. The truth is, Liverpool is my team. However, I feel a bit of compassion for Spurs as they never experienced the flavour of winning in the champion league.

If they win this time, it will lift them into the Limelight of champions where their mark will be indelible forever.

That is my reason to want Spurs to win this one. Do you think Spurs will gather the momentum necessary to win the game?

Hew Dorcasw thank you for the comment. If Liverpool decide to turn up and play then I think they will have to much for spurs in the final. The hurt of loosing last years final might be the driving force they need to win it this year. who knows this season results have been crazy at times so yes spurs have a chance. I am looking forward to it.

    take care my friend

We are all looking forward to the big day. It is slightly ironic that the location is Madrid with two English teams in the final. I would have bet my granny at the beginning of the season that we will see a team from Madrid (sorry granny).Liverpool and Spurs have already overachieved this season and should go without too much pressure into the final.
I hope we will see a great final because it is in the nature of both teams to play attractive attacking football.

Hi Martin. yes those two Spanish giants would have been rubbing their hands at the prospect of playing the final in Madrid, but that’s football and results can be unpredictable. lets hope both teams continue to play the way they have been all season, then it should end up being a classic.

good luck to you and thank you for taking the time to comment.

Hi los. It is fantastic to see two English teams in the final, who both play attacking attractive football. I am looking forward to a free flowing, action packed game. cheers for the kind message about this article. I think Liverpool loosing last years final will be in the front of their minds and they wont want to loos another one. They will be firm favourites when the final comes around.

Best wishes to you my friend.

Finally a sports post!  I grew up playing soccer(what Canadians call it)on the West Coast in Vancouver. Another player on the team and I scored most of the goals. Buzzy Parsons kept playing when we reached our mid-teens, with the urging on of his parents. I drifted away from the game.  One day when watching the Olympic Games in Montreal I saw Buzzy on the Olympic team. Then I saw him in the World Cup, and after that, he played for the Vancouver Whitecaps professional team.

I really enjoyed your post and no doubt Liverpool will be the favorite considering their past history. However, I believe the Spurs will win in overtime or penalty kicks. It makes perfect sense that it will be a close game. I believe the Spurs coach will have them prepared for this game and the Spurs might just want it a little more than Liverpool. Sure, they both want it, but a team who has never hoisted the cup might be a bit more determined.

We will find out in a few weeks. My pick is the Spurs, but not in regulation time.

Hi Ray. I loved your football story thank you for that.

I can’t wait for the final it’s going to be a fantastic occasion. Let’s all hope for a nice early goal in the game, that way neither team can play defensive.

Thank you for the kind message.

    Good luck to you
