The teams and my predictions!

Argentina

Nickname – Albicelestes

This is their 3rd World Cup. With no professional league to speak of, most of the players in Argentina are amateurs. They have never made it past the group stages of a World Cup. They have done well to qualify for the tournament so how will they do?

Prediction:: Going out of the tournament at the group stages looks the most likely outcome once again.

Australia

Nickname -Matildas

The have qualified for the World Cup on 7 occasions and have reached the quarter finals three times in 2007/2011/2015.  They have won the Asia cup 3 times and the Ociania cup once.

Prediction: look likely to make the quarter finals once again but with a bit of luck it could be a first semi-final for the Australians.

Brazil

Nickname-Seleção (The National Squad)
As Canarinhas (The Female Canaries)
Verde-Amarela (Green-and-Yellow)

With 8 appearances at World Cup finals. The first one being in 1991, they always prove to be tough opponents. Their best finish was a runners up position in 2007. They are the most successful team in South American football. Their current FIFA World ranking of 10.

Prediction: could land up in the semi finals but a more realistic end to their tournament will be a quarter final place. No first trophy for the Brazilians.

Cameroon

This will be the Countries 2nd appearance at the World Cup. The first was in 2015.  Where they managed to reach the last 16. 4 times runners up at the African nations cup but they have not been able to transmit that form onto the World stage.

Prediction: with a FIFA world ranking of 46 not much looks likely beyond the last 16 for Cameroon.

Canada

A highest 4th place finish at the 2003 World Cup has never been built upon. The have appeared in 7 World cups with the first one in 1995. They sit at number 5 in the World rankings.

Prediction: another semi final place would be seen as a massive plus but it could well end at the quater final stage for Canada this time around.

China PR

Nickname- Kēngqiāng Méiguī
(Steel Roses)

The have showcased their football talents off on 7 different times at various World Cups. The first being in 1991. They were runners up in 1999 but have never kicked on to claim the highest honour.

Prediction: look a certainty to make the last 16 and would do well to make the last 8.

Chile

Nickname- Las Chicas de rojo (the ladies in red)

This is the first time they have qualified for the World Cup so will be a bit of an unknown quantity as to how they will perform. Ranked 39 in the World.

Prediction: It would be a major achievement to claim one of the highest 3rd place finishes in the group stages and make it through to the knockouts.

England

Nickname(s) – three lionesses/ the lionesses.

This will be the 5 appearance at the World Cup finals. The first was in 1995.

The best finish was 3rd place at the 2015 finals. A team that is growing in confidence and pulling out winning performances against the big nations in a regular basis.

Prediction: a semi final place should be the minimum this team should be looking for. Currently ranked 3 in the World. They will be aiming to win the trophy for the first time.

France

Nickname-Les blueus (the blues)

A fourth World Cup appearance for France with a best finish at the tournament in 2011. They first appeared in 2005. 4th in the World rankings means this team could deliver. Playing at home should give them an edge over most teams

Prediction: A semi-final place should be in the cards for this talented side. Playing at home should push them further. Potential to make the final.

Germany

Nickname- Die Nationalelf ( the national eleven)

2 times winner of the trophy in 2003 and  2007. This world football powerhouse and appeared in 8 World Cups in total. The first being in 1991. They currently sit at second in the World rankings

Prediction: another tilt at the title looks on. Anything less than the semi final would be a huge failure. Possible winners.

Italy

Nickname Azzurre blues

They have a best finish of the quarterfinals  at the 1991 finals and this is the 3rd appearance at the World Cup. 15th in the World rankings means that the latter stages of this tournament seem a tall order for them.

Prediction: if they could reach another quarter final the would see this as success, more likely a round 16 exit for Italy.

Jamaica

Nickname-Reggae Girlz

This will be the Countries first appearance at the World Cup. Expect them to be full of colour and playing with a smile on their faces They sit in 53rd place in the World rankings

Prediction: They will be in party mood qualifying for their first tournament so looking for a first win in the group stages will be seen a progress. Might not get out of the group stages.

Japan

Nickname-Nadeshiko Japan

A previous winner of the World Cup in 2011. This will be the nations 8th appearance at the finals the first was in 1991. 7th in the World rankings they could once again be a dark horse to do well at these finals.

Prediction: They will look at reaching the quarter-finals once again but do not rule the out of a last 4 place if they can find some momentum through the tournament.

Korean Republic

Nickname-Taeguk warriors

They made their debut in the 2003 finals in the USA. This will be their 3rd finals appearance They have reached the round of 16 once before and this was seen as a huge breakthrough for the Country.

Prediction: any win in this

tournament and another round 16 appearance will be seen as success.

Netherlands

Nickname- oranji leeuwinnen (orange lionesses)

This will be the Country’s second appearance at the World Cup finals. The first being the 2015 tournament where they managed to reach the round of 16.They are sitting in 7th place in the World rankings and are a team that is improving all the time.

Prediction: if they could go one better than the last tournament and reach the last 8. They will see this as a major breakthrough moving forward.

New Zealand

Nickname- Football Ferns.

This will be the 5th appearance at a World Cup finals 1991/2007/2011/2015

They have failed to get out of the group stages on all 4 previous occasions. Currently ranked 19th in the World

Prediction: Their previous showings at World Cups suggests that even getting out the group stages might be a challenge again.

Nigeria

Nickname-Super Falcons

They first appeared in 1991 at the World Cup and this will be their 8th time at the finals. They have reached the quarter finals once in 1999. Ranked at 38 by FIFA in the World.

Prediction: Their current day ranking and only one quarter-final appearance suggests that the round of 16 will be a huge success for this African Country.

Norway

Nickname-Gresshoppene (the grasshoppers)

One of the few winners of this trophy in 1995. They are making their 8th appearance at the finals. They once were as high as 2nd in the World rankings but have slipped down to 12th.

Prediction:They will be fiercely competitive but are not the side they once were. It would be no surprise to see them make the quarter finals but the semi finals may be a step too far.

Scotland

This is an exciting first World Cup for Scotland. They have moved themselves to number 20 in the World rankings

Prediction: As it is their first appearance if they could secure one win and even get out the group stages, this would mean success and a breakthrough for the Scotland national team.

South Africa

Nickname- Banyana Banyana (the girls)

This is the debut at the World Cup for this African nation. They have had 5 runners up medals in the African Nation Cup. A FIFA world ranking of 49 suggests that their first World Cup could end up being a tough one

Prediction: not expected to get out of the group stages, so even one win would be a major breakthrough for the rainbow nation.

Spain

Nickname- La roja (the red one)

This will be a second appearance at the World Cup after they made their debut at the 2015 tournament. They failed to get out the group stages first time around and are ranked at 13 by FIFA.

Prediction: They will be looking to make it to the knockout stages this time around. Round of 16 looks highly likely for Spain.

Sweden

Nickname- the blue yellow.

This will be their 8th appearance at the finals and they managed to finish as runners up in 2003. Their first appearance was at the 1991 finals. Their World ranking is 9th.

Prediction: They will be looking for a quarter final final place, but anything beyond that may be a step too far for this current squad

Thailand

Nickname- Chaba Kaew.

They first appeared in the 2015 finals so this will be their second appearance. They failed to get out of the group stages last time around and with a ranking of 34 by FIFA , they will be looking for more this time.

Prediction: it could be another early exit at the group stages for Thailand

USA

Nickname(s)-USWNT /Team USA/ The Stars and Stripes.

They are the most decorated team at the World Cup with 3 wins in 1991/1999/2015.

They have made 8 appearances and are the current World number 1 ranked team. They are the current holders of the trophy.

Prediction: a World super power in women’s football they will be hard to stop once again. Anything less than reaching the final once again might be considered failure. Can anyone stop them this time around.

  1. Womans football is for sure getting more popular by the day. I feel like even though females don’t get the same attention males do, but females do have to be more skilled than their male counterparts. Do you agree? I live in Australia so I have to go for the Aussies in the 2019 FIFA Womens World Cup! Aussie Aussie Aussie

    1. Hi Marvin. I don’t think they have to be more skilled it more about the pace of the game. If it is fasted paced then the games tend to be more exciting to watch. Australia should do ok in this tournament is they can get of to a fast start.

The women’s game is about to take off in a big way. this tournament will deliver the game to a whole new audience.

Good luck to you in Aussie.

  2. I was wondering when the next FIFA Women’s World Cup was taking place, and you have provided that answer and much more with this complete guide on the event. I have bookmarked the page and website so I can come back again. Of course, I am sure this will be a watched event all over the globe, and I will be tuning in from Dubai, UAE.

It will be interesting to see if the USA can retain the cup this year, there has been a lot of turnover on the team and there are some teams that have really strong teams they are fielding for this tournament. That is always the case, I know (strong teams) but it seems every time there is a surprise team that makes it far along and provides great entertainment. Let’s see which one it will be this year.

It appears that from the rankings the same perennial contenders will once again be vying to take the cup home, but as in every sport, who knows, there may be a dark horse winner at the end of the day. In any case, we have some great World Cup action coming our way very soon. Can’t wait…

    1. HI Dave yes this tournament to send the women’s game onto a new level. USA will be favourites once again but you never know on European soil an outsider like France, with their home support behind them could well step up to the mark.

Thank you for bookmarking my page I hope you find it usefull for kick off times and what days the matches are taking place.

Thank you for the kind message.

      Good luck to you.

  3. Very interesting content you have up here for we football lovers. I couldn’t have asked for more while anticipating their world cup. My best team going into this competition is the USWNT and I’m sure they would surely deliver absolute success and I’m tipping them for the victory. I also like the full details you have showered on us with this post’s information. Seriously, it’s golden

    1. HI RoDarrick . Thank you for the glowing endorsement of this article, I really do appreciate it. USA will once again be the hot favourites for the FIFA Women’s World CUP in 2019 but you never know in football. That is the beauty of it. Look out for one of the European teams causing a shock and maybe lifting the trophy for the first time.

Not long until the tournament start.

Thank you for the mind message once again.

All the best to you my friend.
