The Messi vs Ronaldo debate rages on but let me show you why one is better than the other and who is the best?
This unique look at the two players, and the different parts of each of their games, offers insights into who might be better.
Let me introduce you two of the best the Game has ever seen!
Lionel Andres Messi Cuccittini – born on the 24 June 1987 in Rosario Argentina. Playing Position forward he wears the shirt with the number 10 on the back of it.
He was born and raised in Argentina.
He moved to Spain and to Barcelona at the age of 13, as he had a growth hormone deficiency and the club agreed to pay for his medical treatment.
He made his first team debut at the age of 17 after progressing quickly through the youth team ranks.
He is known simply as Messi
Cristiano Ronaldo dos Santos Aveiro – born on the 5 February 1985 in Funchal Madeira, Portugal.
Playing position forward and wears the number 7 on the back of his shirt.
He was born and raised on the Portuguese island of Madeira.
At the age of 15 he was diagnosed with a racing heart and underwent an operation to treat his condition.
He signed for Manchester United at the age of 18 from Sporting CP where he started his senior playing career.
He is simply know as Ronaldo.
Let the rivalry begin
On the field of play!
Let’s start with Messi the left footed little magician from Argentina who plays for Barcelona.
His strengths are his ability to make the ball stick to his feet at all times like glue, his fast running pace , and the way he can just glide past players during a game, frightens any opposition team.
It all looks so effortless when he crosses the white line to play a football match.
Then there is Ronaldo the world football Portuguese star who currently plays for Juventus.
His strengths are lightning quick, strong, excellent in the air, technically good with both feet. He loves to be the star and grab the headlines for scoring amazing goals.
They both bring amazing skills and a winning attitude onto the pitch so it is a very close one.
Just for the pure joy of watching him play and how easy he makes the game look, Lionel Messi shades this one for me.
Ronaldo has had spells in England, Portugal, Spain and Italy. Playing in different countries with foreign languages and various styles compared to Messi a one club man since the age of 13.
Loyalty is a very honourable thing in football these days and to remain at one of the biggest clubs season after season you have to keep proving yourself and improving your game.
For always setting new challenges for himself and proving he can do it anywhere, being prepared to grow and learn new languages and cultures a certain Mr C Ronaldo takes the honours in this one
Its a 3 points and a win for Ronaldo
Messi = 3 – Ronaldo = 3
Who has won the most trophy’s?
Both Messi and Ronaldo have won the best player in the world five times each. I know that’s unreal. The Argentinian maestro Messi has a record 32 trophys for his club including 9 league titles. 4 champions leagues, and 3 copa del reys. The Portuguese superstar has won 27 major trophys in his career to date including 5 league titles, 5 UEFA Champions Leagues and one UEFA European Championship. The total list between them is truly mind blowing and nearly impossible to split them. They are both serial winners and love to lift a trophy above their head.
A draw is the only option here 1 point each
Messi = 4 – Ronaldo = 4
Playing for you country on international duty
It’s no surprise they both have many international caps for their respective Countries.
A country should always select the best player available to them.
Ronaldo represents Portugal and has had a winners medal in the UEFA European Championship in France 2016 and a runners up medal in Portugal in 2012.
Messi represents Argentina and has won gold at the Olympic games in Beijing 2008, a runners up medal in the FIFA World Cup in Brazil in 2014 And 3 runners up medals in the Copa America in 2007 in Venezuela, 2015 in Chile and 2016 in The United States.
Neither has been overly successful in this area. They both would have dreamt of winning the greatest honour in football the World Cup but neither has.
With probably only one World cup each left to play in, will they win the next one? It’s doubtful as the rest of their respective teams are not up to their level and the pressure of carrying the team to glory has seemed too much for them so far.
The draw is the best option here 1 point each.
Messi = 5 – Ronaldo = 5
Who scores more goals?
Messi has scored over 685 senior career goals for Club and Country and holds the records for most goals in La Liga and Europes top five leagues 415, most goals in a calander season 96, in one season in La Liga and Europe 50 as well as many more including a record 26 goals in El clasico against their bitter rivals Real Madrid. oh and 8 hat-tricks in the Champions League as well.
Ronaldo holds the record for most goals in the champions league 124, the most goals in the UEFA European Championship 9 he also has most hat-tricks in La Liga 34 and can match that of Messi with 8 champions league hat-tricks as well. He has scored 700 senior career goals for Club and Country.
Again the two players seem to match each other when it comes to scoring. If one hits a hat-trick the other seems to follow.
Another draw here 1 more point a piece.
Messi = 6 – Ronaldo = 6
Are you a footballer or a celebrity?
Brand Ronaldo is definitely after the celebrity lifestyle, any chance to be in the headlines, to get his shirt off, to have his picture taken , he will be first in line.
He also needs to be the centre of attention all the time on the field and has been known to sulk if a team-mate does not pass him the ball.
If you compare this to brand Messi a player who you hardly ever see courting the headlines, unless for footballing reasons.
I am not sure I have ever seen Messi rip his shirt off after a goal celebration to reveal his 12 pack abs, which I am sure he has too.
Simply based on being more of a team player and a footballer not tying to be a major celebrity, after all this is about football. I think a win is in order here for Mr Messi.
My 3 points for the win go to Messi
Messi = 9 – Ronaldo = 6
Could they play in the same team?
In a word no. To be reguarded as the best player in the world you need to have an ego and the desire to be the main player for your team. Two big egos like theses would lead to a falling out, as neither wants to be second best.
The debate will go on and on . You all have your favourites but from my laying out the facts and how they behave on and off the field of play, we have a clear winner.. I’m just saying the points don’t lie.
The final points total sees Messi with 9 points compared to Ronaldo with just 6 points. Can you argue with that?
In my humble opinion I think Messi just shades it for me, in pure footballing terms, but it is so close I might need the video assistant referee to clear it up and sort it out for me.
Thank you for reading my fun look at these two amazing players. It is a privilege to have watched them both in my lifetime.
