The Messi vs Ronaldo debate rages on but let me show you why one is better than the other and who is the best?

This unique look at the two players, and the different parts of each of their games, offers insights into who might be better.

Let me introduce you two of the best the Game has ever seen!

messi vs ronaldo

messi vs ronaldo

Lionel Andres Messi Cuccittini – born on the  24 June 1987 in Rosario Argentina. Playing Position forward he wears the shirt with the number 10 on the back of it.

He was born and raised in Argentina.

He moved to Spain and to Barcelona at the age of 13, as he had a growth hormone deficiency and the club agreed to pay for his medical treatment.

He made his first team debut at the age of 17 after progressing quickly through the youth team ranks.

He is known simply as Messi

Cristiano Ronaldo dos Santos Aveiro – born on the 5 February 1985 in Funchal Madeira, Portugal.

Playing position forward and wears the number 7 on the back of his shirt.

He was born and raised on the Portuguese island of Madeira.

At the age of 15 he was diagnosed with a racing heart and underwent an operation to treat his condition.

He signed for Manchester United at the age of 18 from Sporting CP where he started his senior playing career.

He is simply know as Ronaldo.

Let the rivalry begin

On the field of play!

Let’s start with Messi the left footed little magician from Argentina who plays for Barcelona.
His strengths are his ability to make the ball stick to his feet at all times like glue, his fast running pace , and the way he can just glide past players during a game, frightens any opposition team.
It all looks so effortless when he crosses the white line to play a football match.
Then there is Ronaldo the world football Portuguese star who currently plays for Juventus.
His strengths are lightning quick, strong, excellent in the air, technically good with both feet. He loves to be the star and grab the headlines for scoring amazing goals.
They both bring amazing skills and a winning attitude onto the pitch so it is a very close one.
Just for the pure joy of watching him play and how easy he makes the game look, Lionel Messi shades this one for me.
It’s 3 points and the win for Messi
Messi = 3  – Ronaldo = 0
Watch in awe at some of Messi’s and ronaldol’s wonderful dribbling skills in full flow!

One club vs many clubs

Ronaldo has had spells in England, Portugal, Spain and Italy. Playing in different countries with foreign languages and various styles compared to Messi a one club man since the age of 13.
Loyalty is a very honourable thing in football these days and to remain at one of the biggest clubs season after season you have to keep proving yourself and improving your game.
For always setting new challenges for himself and proving he can do it anywhere, being prepared to grow and learn new languages and cultures a certain Mr C Ronaldo takes the honours in this one
Its a 3 points and a win for Ronaldo
Messi = 3 – Ronaldo = 3

Who has won the most trophy’s?

Both Messi and Ronaldo have won the best player in the world five times each. I know that’s unreal. The Argentinian maestro Messi  has a record 32 trophys for his club including 9 league titles. 4 champions leagues, and 3 copa del reys. The Portuguese superstar has won 27 major trophys in his career to date including 5 league titles, 5 UEFA Champions Leagues and one UEFA European Championship. The total list between them is truly mind blowing and nearly impossible to split them. They are both serial winners and love to lift a trophy above their head.

A draw is the only option here 1 point each

Messi = 4 – Ronaldo = 4

Playing for you country on international duty

It’s no surprise they both have many international caps for their respective Countries.
A country should always select the best player available to them.
Ronaldo represents Portugal and has had a winners medal in the UEFA European Championship in France 2016 and a runners up medal in Portugal in 2012.
Messi represents Argentina and has won gold at the Olympic games in Beijing 2008, a runners up medal in the FIFA World Cup in Brazil in 2014 And 3 runners up medals in the Copa America in 2007 in Venezuela, 2015 in Chile and 2016 in The United States.
Neither has been overly successful in this area. They both would have dreamt of winning the greatest honour in football the World Cup but neither has.
With probably only one World cup each left to play in, will they win the next one?  It’s doubtful as the rest of their respective teams are not up to their level and the pressure of carrying the team to glory has seemed too much for them so far.
The draw is the best option here 1 point each.
Messi  = 5 – Ronaldo = 5

Who scores more goals?

Messi has scored over 685 senior career goals for Club and Country and holds the records for most goals in La Liga and Europes top five leagues 415, most goals in a calander season 96, in one season in La Liga and Europe 50 as well as many more including a record 26 goals in El clasico against their bitter rivals Real Madrid. oh and 8 hat-tricks in the Champions League as well.
Ronaldo holds the record for most goals in the champions league 124, the most goals in the UEFA European Championship 9 he also has most hat-tricks in La Liga 34 and can match that of Messi with  8 champions league hat-tricks as well. He has scored 700 senior career goals for Club and Country.
Again the two players seem to match each other when it comes to scoring. If one hits a hat-trick the other seems to follow.
Another draw here  1  more point a piece.
Messi = 6 – Ronaldo = 6

Are you a footballer or a celebrity?

Brand Ronaldo is definitely after the celebrity lifestyle, any chance to be in the headlines, to get his shirt off, to have his picture taken , he will be first in line.
He also needs to be the centre of attention all the time on the field and has been known to sulk if a team-mate does not pass him the ball.
If you compare this to brand Messi a player who you hardly ever see courting the headlines, unless for footballing reasons.
I am not sure I have ever seen Messi rip his shirt off after a goal celebration to reveal his 12 pack abs, which I am sure he has too.
Simply based on being more of a team player and a footballer not tying to be a major celebrity, after all this is about football.  I think a win is in order here for Mr Messi.
My 3 points for the win  go to Messi
Messi = 9 – Ronaldo = 6

Could they play in the same team?

In a word no. To be reguarded as the best player in the world you need to have an ego and the desire to be the main player for your team. Two big egos like theses would lead to a falling out, as neither wants to be second best.

So who is the best?

The debate will go on and on . You all have your favourites but from my laying out the facts and how they behave on and off the field of play, we have a clear winner.. I’m just saying the points don’t lie.

The final points total sees Messi with  9 points compared to Ronaldo with just 6 points. Can you argue with that?

In my humble opinion I think Messi just shades it for me, in pure footballing terms, but it is so close I might need the video assistant referee to clear it up and sort it out for me.

Thank you for reading my fun look at these two amazing players. It is a privilege to have watched them both in my lifetime.

It is one of the most interesting posts I ever read. This debate is very old and exciting as well. Ronaldo’s supporters will undoubtedly say, just nonsense. On the other hand, Messi’s fans will define, what’s new of it! Haha, 😀
However, Messi is unique in terms of gesture, posture, modesty, cool and calm as a player against his fame to my personal view. Accuracy and the aesthetics of football remained the rest.

I really enjoyed the article. Heartfelt thanks.

Warm wishes,

Thanks for writing this comparison of Messi and Renaldo.i have been watching this two players for so many years now and I must say they are both good or let me say the best in what they do as far as football is concern. Most times people do argue  who is the best player among this two. In my own point of view it hard to choose the best player among them because they seems to always be ahead of there game each year.choosing the best between them depends on individual  point of view. But as far as history of football is concern this two players keep breaking records. I like messi personally with his style of play.

    Matthew Hofman · 12/04/2019 at 11:36 am

Hi Sajua. It’s great that you message me. These two will be remembered as giants of football forever in history. It’s definitely hard to separate them as they both have different and amazing qualities. The drive to be the best is what separates them from the rest.

Eromomen · 12/04/2019 at 9:26 am

Thanks for this wonderful presentation. This two persons are both great. To get the best between them will be difficult. But I still prefer messi than Ronaldo .

It’s a privilege to watch these two guys play in my generation. Both players are good in their style of football. Messi’ football can be qualified as talent while Ronaldo can be said to be hardwork. Irrespective of how we may see it, both players has brought joy into the heart of all football lovers in the world. Having them play in our lifetime is really awesome.

    Matthew Hofman · 12/04/2019 at 9:38 am

    Hi Brent

I agree with you they are two fantastic players, who will go down in history as two of the best ever.

They must have realised from an early age they had talent, then just keep training, working & learning to improve. The rest  as they say is history.

Take care and thank you for the comment

wadud1998 · 08/04/2019 at 1:23 pm

I read your post and found out that you were asking about the best from Messi and Ronaldo. In fact, I’d like to say that the two are the best because both of them play very well, there is no way to understand who is the best and I like Messi because i am Messi fans so Messi is the best of my side.

    Matthew Hofman · 08/04/2019 at 1:33 pm

Hi Wadud.  This post was meant as a bit of fun. They are both amazing talented players with very little to choose between them. Thank you for comment.

jhonnyhasan · 08/04/2019 at 1:21 pm

Hi, I read your article very carefully. I think It is a tough question for me.They are two good players in this planet . But I like the magic of Messies game between them. When I see Messi playing in the field, I am  fascinated by watching the TV. His dribbling astonishes me more. But Ronaldo’s game also impressed me. But Messi is all about me. Thank you so much for giving me a chance to write something about two living legend.

    Matthew Hofman · 08/04/2019 at 1:39 pm

Hi It certainly is a tough question and probably one that does not have a definite answer to. I think it just comes down to personal preference, are you in the Messi or Ronaldo corner? The choice is ultimately yours.

    Thank for messaging me.

Seyi · 08/04/2019 at 1:14 pm

Hello, firstly I would like to commend your effort on this wonderful article. I would like to say here that these two guys are the greatest footballers in the history of football for me. That been said , Ronaldo is everything to me as this guy has gotten to where he is not just as a result of his talented skills but with alot of hard work. It’s also a privilege to watch these guys play in my lifetime.

    Matthew Hofman · 08/04/2019 at 1:46 pm

Hi Seyi.  I agree it has been a total joy to watch them both play. They will definitely go down as two of the greatest ever. I love messi’s running style with the ball. That’s why he just shades it for me.

Thank you for the kind message.

Dave · 08/04/2019 at 1:08 pm

Hi Matthew
Nice article. My older son has just started playing soccer (football) here in Oz. Loved the playing, hated the shin guards that need to be worn in. 🙂
Down here it seems all about Ronaldo, but I don’t think my sons impressed. 😉
This is something that will definitely interest him as well. I think I would have liked the clips, but for some reason it’s blocked on your site, but it provided a Youtube link. Cheers,

    Matthew Hofman · 08/04/2019 at 2:13 pm

Hi Dave. Greetings from the uk. I am not sure how you can ever truly compare these two greats of the game. They are both wonderfulThank players. Thank you for letting me know about the links. I think they have taken down those videos for some Strange reason. Check back on my website soon and all will be fixed.

    Good luck

    Thank you for your message

Tolu · 08/04/2019 at 1:07 pm

This is a debate that has been on for ages and definitely would continue for many more years. I’m aware of the medical challenge Messi had when he was a teenager, but just knowing of Ronaldo. Both Messi and Ronaldo are exceptionally gifted players and I always want to refrain from the argument on who is better. first and foremost, Messi was not born in 1987, he was born in 198 contrary to what you wrote. I’m, a fan of Ronaldo and I can say he is better. He has better leadership qualities and his hunger over the years has kept him at the level he is.

    Matthew Hofman · 08/04/2019 at 2:25 pm

Hi Tolo. I agree this debate will probably go on for ever, with two of the best players ever. I think you will find Messi’s birthdate is correct. He is 32. If he was born in 198 he would be a very  old man. Just kidding.  I will try ringing the great man to find out for definite, do you think I will get hold of him ?

Top man and thank you for the lovely Comments

    Take care.

AnnetteCristina · 08/04/2019 at 1:01 pm

Encouraging to read how each of these amazing players overcame such big health obstacles that could have kept them out of the sport entirely. They each could have bought into the victim mentality so prevalent today. With dedication and hard work, they are both well known for their skills and a symbol that with persistence and focus, one can truly overcome anything. Definitely, something today’s youth needs to model.

    Matthew Hofman · 08/04/2019 at 3:04 pm

Hi Annette. Thank for reading my article and for leaving the kind message.

Exactly right you should never give up on your dreams no matter what the obstacles are in front of you. Keep trying and you will succeed.

Both top players so it’s only a bit of fun to try and separate them. In reality you probably can’t.

    Take care

Mustapha Ibrahim · 08/04/2019 at 12:59 pm

Messi is not only an incredible scorer and gifted playmaker, he also makes everyone around him a better player. A true leader, he brings his team together.

Ronaldo is a more of an executor, who plays high up the pitch and scores great goals when given the chance, Messi, who can do that just as well,

but is also comfortable dropping deep and keeping possession of the ball with his team.

    Matthew Hofman · 08/04/2019 at 3:08 pm

Hi mustapha.  Great analysis of the two players from you.

Two amazing players who can pretty much do anything on a soccer pitch.

Brilliant to watch them both in action

Good luck to you me friend

    Thanks for the kind message.

ODavid · 08/04/2019 at 12:57 pm

Wow! What an interesting and engaging article it is. No doubt, in the world of football for like 8 years back, they both are the 2 most celebrated players, they also are more popular than others and they have continually work harder. A success story surely begins with consistency and they have been at their best all these years.
In conclusíon, preference for any of them over the other should be left for a passionate football fan. They are both great, they are still on fire… Thanks

    Matthew Hofman · 08/04/2019 at 3:12 pm

Hi ODavid. Agree mate they are both still on fire. When one scores a hat trick the other seems to follow with their own hat trick. They both have a deep love and passion for playing the beautiful game.

    Thank you for the message

    Take care and best wishes.

Jay · 08/04/2019 at 12:55 pm

When it comes to Ronaldo and Messi the debate on this two players can go on for days and one would not still come out on top of the other. Why is this? Well, in my opinion, I think it is because they both have their separate ways by which fans use in appreciating their way of football.

You would find that their fans are almost the same in number and there is no way you can convince the other that they are better than the latter. In my opinion, I think Ronaldo is better because Messi is a natural born footballer and playing football comes naturally to him but Ronaldo is a hard worker and he had to build himself to get to where he currently is.

    Matthew Hofman · 08/04/2019 at 3:15 pm

Hi jay. They do definitely have their own style and way of playing. Well said by you to pick up on this. I enjoy watching them both play and dominate games. Two big match players for sure.

    Best wishes my friend.

Top man for taking time out to message me. 🙏

Hanna · 06/04/2019 at 9:24 am

Great article on the 2 most popular football players!

I actually was just finding out about Messi from Argentina, but i am so glad to read your post about these two fantastic footbal players.

I do know that Messi has some medical issues, but i am surprised to know that Ronaldo has some medical problems too.  It is just so great to know that even having these issues, they both still excel in their own leagues.  Truly amazing.

They are both great athletes, but i still am a big fan of Messi.

Thanks for sharing this post!

    Matthew Hofman · 06/04/2019 at 10:43 am

    Hi Hanna.

I agree two amazing players who just seem to be getting better as time goes by.

It just shows if you want to be the best at anything then you need to overcome any obstacles put in your way and carry on. Until you reach your goals.

Thank you for liking this article and for taking the time to mess me.

    Take care. You
